It's final exam season, ugh I know. But I have learned to appreciate this time of the semester because it means the end is near! I'm sharing a few tips that I practice for midterms & final exams that really help me feel prepared before tests and have my final projects completed ahead of the due date. I hope these help you have a happy and successful final exam week!
1. Divide and plan | Finals require a plan of action to handle calmly. Before I start studying or working on anything, I write down all of the finals I have and all of the assignments I have due during finals week. This semester I had the following written down:
Multivariate Statistical Coding Analysis Take-Home Final
Comparison Essay
Research Paper Proposal
Final Research Paper
Final Policy Memo
Having a written list really helps keep me organized and also helps me prioritize my assignments. Trying to take on everything at the same time is very hectic and has proven unsuccessful for me in the past. So now, I stick to getting finals studying and assignments done using a system.
2. Get the assignments done first | When I have a ton of studying to do, the last thing I want to think about is doing assignments for another class. That's why I finish my assignments that are due before I start seriously studying. Of course you can do some light studying during the weeks/days leading up to your final, but I spend the majority of that time knocking out any assignments I have to do. This helps me really focus on the study material and decreases my stress levels since I have fewer things on my to-do list. After finishing my assignments, my list looked like this:
Multivariate Statistical Coding Analysis Take-Home Final
3. Take breaks | Taking short breaks is a great way to reward yourself for getting work done/learning information and it helps keep your brain from getting exhausted too quickly. If I'm studying at my place, I take breaks by watching an episode of a TV show, checking social media, painting my nails, having a snack, or doing some yoga.
4. Mix solo studying and group studying | I personally prefer studying and working alone, but that gets old really quickly during finals week. So, I like to alternate studying/working on my own for a few hours with working with others. Group/partner studying is good if you have the social self control to be around others when there's work to be done. But, I appreciate sitting at a table with a friend while doing work - it makes me happier, it makes me feel more obligated to study and it's nice to know someone is in the same boat.
5. Eat healthy snacks and drink water | I prepare healthy snacks and meals during finals week so that I can easily pack and eat them. Some of my favorite healthy snacks include bananas, blueberries, and yogurt. I also always keep a bottle of water with me.
6. Set alarms | I use alarms on my iPhone to set limits on my work (so I know when to take breaks), and to remind me of things I may forget otherwise because of the craziness of finals week. I also set limits on how late I will stay up during the week, and use alarms to tell me when it's time to wind down for the night and get some rest.
7. Make/use practice tests | Before your exam, do a practice version of the exam to prepare! I sometimes make my own exam with possible questions or have a friend quiz me over the test information. All of these get your mind prepared for an exam and calm your nerves.
8. Be confident | Once you've done all you can to do well on your final exams, just believe that you're prepared and try your very best when it comes time to take the test!
The Fastest Network Cable Can Now Transfer 1 GB in 0.003 of a Second
World’s fastest network cable allow you download movie in seconds.
Researches all around the world are secretly competing in between each other, there is no doubt about that. One of the most recent big hits was sucessfully made by researchers in Eindhoven University of Technology in The Netherlands and University of Central Florida in the US. They created the fastest network cable in the world. It can transmit 255 terabits per second. This is same as all traffic flowing through the internet at peak time.
At this moment, the fastest cable on the market can transmit 100 gigabits per second (gbps), which equals 12.5 gigabytes per second (GBps). It is indeed impressive, but many people agreed, that this is simply just not enough. That is the main reason, why they decided to create new fiber optic, that can carry almost unimaginable 2,500 times more data, meaning 255 terabits per second (tbps), which is 32 terabytes per second (TBps). Sounds extremely complicated, but in a simple way, it means that you could transfer 1 GB in 0.003 of a second.
There was a lot of discussion whether it is possible or not, so Sebastian Anthony atExtreme Tech said: “255 tbps is mind blowingly quick; it’s greater, by far, than the total capacity of every single cable – hundreds of glass fibres – currently spanning the Atlantic Ocean.”
The sub-sea cables that are responsible for transmitting Internet signals are, what is called single-mode optical fibre cable. This means, that this cable can only carry one signal from a single laser at a time. After that signal is traveling to the centre of the cable through its core. The amounts of data, which are able to be transmitted through this cables are very limited by law of the physics.
The new cable, on the other hand, is known as “multi core” or multi mode. In this form of cables, there are 7 cores arranged like a hexagon, that run along its length. This means, that the singnal can be transmitted from 7 different lasers at the same time
The team was testing multi core in a lab along the one-kilometre stretch, and now they are working on a process of introducing it to the market. No need to say here, that this is going very slowly. According to Extreme Tech, multi-core fibre is going to eventuallyreplace every single-mode cable that currently supports Internet. This will not happen any time soon, as there are millions of kilometres of “old stuff” and their replacement might take many years.
“It would be like replacing every two-lane highway in America with eight-lane raised freeways. It is totally possible, just not economically feasible,” Andrew Tarantola fromGizmodo said. He also added, that with the speed that the Internet is currently growing, it won’t take too long till we will need this technology.

Mind-Controlled Scalextric by B-Reel
The idea is simple: what if you could control slot cars with the power of your mind? Mind Scalextric is an R&D project we developed at B-Reel that combines the latest technologies and lets people race one another using their minds.
From B-Reel’s secret laboratory comes a brain-bending experimental project utilising a number of cutting-edge tech tools.
There are few commercial devices that claim to safely read your brain signals. We ended up choosing the Mindwave headset from Neurosky for this experiment because of its unobtrusive design and affordable price.
Then we got a basic version Scalextric and started to play around with it. The principle is straightforward: there are two cars on separate tracks that you can control with a handset. The more current you let pass through the handset, the faster the cars go. You can design your track and challenge your friends. But how could we control the current with brainwaves instead of a handset?
The next step was getting an old Arduino Diecimila and starting to figure out the easiest way to connect it to the Scalextric so that we could then write a small application to control the speed of the cars using the computer, for example moving the mouse.
This involved a few steps, first of which was designing the electronic circuit to replace the typical Scalextric’s handset controller with a programmed Arduino device. The guys in the Arduino forum were extremely helpful in this case, making the process super easy.
The Arduino microcontroller was programmed initially to fade a value up and down to make the car start and stop after few seconds. Once this proved to be working, we used Processing to enable computer-to-Arduino interaction. An early test consisted of controlling the speed of the car moving your mouse cursor. The final exciting step was connecting the Mindwave device output as an input for our setup.
Mindwave uses something called ThinkGear to let 3rd party applications read the mindset device data. Luckily Google showed us the path to a ThinkGear Java socket library that can be used with Processing to capture mind activity data from the Mindwave device.
At this point all the components are connected and working, opening the door to new ideas and exciting new developments!

Hydro Bike : Sporty Hydrogen Powered Bike Design
- HYDRO BIKE offers a cheaper way to travel. The design of this bike was meant to save your hard earned money without looking like a cheapskate. Powered by hydrogen cell but added with “unworkable” pair of pedals.
Why the need to have pedals?
As long as it has pedals (self-propelled), it would still
legally be considered a bicycle in many countries. There’s no need
of a motorcycle license, yearly road tax, summons and anything that
cost money for owning a bike.

Designer : Imran Othman
With a high cost of petroleum, hydrogen is a cheaper alternative fuel that powered the bike. Zero carbon emission and 100% hot water! With the usual aesthetically suspect such as bulkiness or cheapness that usually comes with the alternative energy powered bicycle, the design of this bike still looks sleek, performance inspired and mysteriously fast.
Cheaper, cleaner and being a “cheapskater”… Who says you need to have money to look cool? Just good design!
